THE equestrian world of eventing has paid tribute to a national and international judge, photographer and competition commentator Mike Bain from Glazebrook, who has sadly passed away at the age of 70.

More than 100 family members and friends joined representatives from the horse world for the funeral of Michael Harrison Bain that took place at St Elphin’s Parish Church, yesterday, August 15th. The church service and committal at Walton Lea were officiated by Canon June Steventon.

Mike, from Carlton Way, was born in Edinburgh. He was initially a theatre lighting technician and caterer but his passion for everything equine led him on a different career path. He moved to Warrington more than 30 years ago. His lifetime interest in horses had been pivotal in his rise to becoming a top eventing judge and prize-winning photographer. It was his labour of love that took him to events all over the world, the pinnacles being his attendance at three Olympic Games staged in Athens, Brazil and the London summer games in 2012.
Described as a ‘larger than life’ character Mike was known for his sense of humour, generosity, and tenacity, making sure all his events were conducted strictly by the rule book, but also ensuring the hundreds of competitions he was in official charge of were safe and enjoyable for competitors and spectators alike

The team at British Eventing has paid tribute to Mike’s contribution to the sport by saying: “We were sorry to hear the sad news of the passing of Mike Bain. He was well known by riders, owners and photographers involved with British Eventing. Mike gave his time to the sport in many ways as a fence judge, cross country starter and commentator, supporting the sport across the world such as the Olympics in London, Athens, and Rio.”
Adding: “Mike commentated at various events such as The Pony Europeans in Poland in 2011, and provided media coverage for events such as Burghley, Badminton and Bramham to name a few. He fenced judged at three World Equestrian Games in 2002, 2014 and 2016”.
Mike is survived by his wife Marianne, partner Stephanie Freeman and two stepdaughters Chloe and Olivia.
