United Reformed churches join forces for “Big Green Fair”

FOUR of Warrington’s United reformed churches are joining forces with a “BIG Green Fair” at St John’s United Reformed Church, Wilderspool Causeway, on April 23.

The four churches of the United Reformed Church Pastorate in Warrington have been working together on Eco Church (https://arocha.org.uk/eco-church/) and have formed a group to progress the ‘Lifestyle’ aspects of the programme. The idea for the Big Green Fair emerged from one of the meetings as a way of building links with the local community in Warrington on how they can respond together to meet the challenge of climate change.

“It is important for churches to recognise and act on the climate emergency”, says Richard Pearce, Green Apostle for the URC Mersey Synod and a member of Lymm URC, “because caring for God’s creation is a Biblical requirement and central to the Christian mission. Humans, made in God’s image, have a unique responsibility for the wellbeing of creation and stewardship of the Earth.”

The event will take place at St John’s United Reformed Church, The Causeway, Warrington WA4 6QE on 23 April this year from 10.30am to 3.30pm. It will be a fun day packed with lots of environmental information and activities for all the family including how to reduce your carbon footprint, local ethical trader stalls, recycled clothing fashion show, repair café, eco-gardening activities, pledge tree, children’s craft activities competitions and much more.

It is hoped that the event will attract visitors from all over Warrington and encourage people to make lasting changes in their lifestyles to reduce their impacts on the environment and to spread the word to others in the community.

“The involvement of community organisations in tackling the climate emergency is going to be critical to help us reach our targets and allay the worst impacts” says Cllr. David Ellis, Chair of Warrington’s Climate Emergency Commission. “Churches and their congregations are possibly the single most important of our community groups and can have a key role both in communicating the message and taking action themselves.”

Local businesses and organisations related to anything eco and green will be there, including Refill Round, Vintage Viola, Walton Lea Partnership, RSPB, and info stalls about saving energy, reducing energy bills, electric cars, solar panels, international charities, Arocha Foundation, etc, who will all have stalls.

There will be outdoor activities such as making bug houses, bird feeders, and seed planting with a sunflower growing competition and refreshments including fair trade products.

There is also a competition for children to design a poster about making a difference to the planet at home.

  1. This is an excellent initiative to help spread awareness of the need to consider our environment more and make every effort to reduce our carbon footprint.
