THE 42-acre Spud Wood at Lymm is to be signposted officially – some 23 years after work started on planting it.

The Woodland Trust has been granted planning consent by Warrington Borough Council for signing at the main entrance to the wood in Stage Lane.

There are also entrances in Oughtrington Lane and Burford Lane and an unofficial footpath from adjoining Helsdale Wood – an area of ancient woodland.

The Woodland Trust started planting Spud Wood in 1998 on what was previously a potato field.

It was named by children at nearby Oughtrington Primary School following a competition.

Now maturing, t wood has two kilometers of footpath and a variety of native trees.

According to the Trust, it is alive with squirrels and birds and is an ideal spot for walking and picnics.
