Commissioner says “thank you” to road safety heroes

ROAD Safety Heroes are being celebrated in Warrington this week – Road Safety Week.

Police and Crime Commissioner John Dwyer is reminding everyone of the importance of road safety and focusing on the people and organizations who work to ensure the roads remain safe for all road users.
He said: : “One death on our roads is one too many. I know there is always more we can do to reduce harm and promote safer road use.
“The Roads and Crime Unit at Cheshire Constabulary do fantastic work, which was recently showcased on the TV show Motorway Cops. I know many other officers, staff and volunteers who all work hard to make our roads safer, and for that I thank them all.”
Making the county’s roads safer is a key priority for the Commissioner, and he outlined how he was going to achieve this in his Police and Crime Plan. Specifically, he wants to focus on the need to educate those who use the roads around the ‘Fatal 5’, which are the main contributory factors for road traffic collisions.
The Fatal 5 are:
• Careless driving
• Drink/drug driving
• Not wearing a seatbelt
• Distracted. For example, using a mobile phone
• Speeding
Mr Dwyer said: “The education of road users isn’t just the sole responsibility of the police. I will continue to play an active role in, and support the Cheshire Road Safety Group to ensure all the road safety awareness activity delivered across Cheshire is co-ordinated and delivers the same objectives.
“I am committed to developing relationships with national organisations such as the Institute of Advanced Motorists and Road Peace to understand best practice and new techniques in road safety.
Road safety is an important issue that residents across the county regularly raise with the Commissioner. In his Autumn Survey, he would like to hear about communities’ road safety concerns.

  1. Warrington already knows how to stop speeding, it puts up the speed limit on Cromwell Road because drivers are already ignoring the 30mph limit, on a road already dangerous for cyclists.
