Two arrested after jumping into Mersey following alleged theft and assault at retail park

TWO people have been arrested after jumping in the River Mersey to evade police following an alleged theft and assault on a delivery driver at the Riverside Retail Park in Warrington, last night.

A 21-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man are currently in custody following the incident which involved police assisted by air support and Cheshire Fire and Rescue.



A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: “At around 10.30pm on Monday 18 October police were called to a retail park on Wharf Street in Warrington following reports of a man with injuries.
“The victim reported seeing two people stealing from his delivery van while in the town centre and they subsequently assaulted him.
“The pair had fled the scene and entered into the River Mersey. Officers, including assistance from air support and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, conducted a thorough search of the water and located a male and a female.
A 21-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assault and a 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of theft. Both are currently in police custody.
The victim received hospital treatment.
