Penketh Carnival set to reunite community

AFTER more than 40 years of tradition and a year like no other, Penketh Carnival is all ready to go ahead this Saturday, August 14.

With lots of stalls and charities excited to fundraise again and performers desperate to get their dancing shoes on there will be a full day of free entertainment.
The team behind the event has worked tirelessly to try and bring this event together after only officially deciding to go ahead on July 19 – no easy feat for an event this size .
With the usual attendance of Harrisons funfair, who have been supporting the Carnival for 40 years, the event is set to be a wonderful opportunity for children to enjoy after being so isolated for 18 months.
One of the volunteer event organisers Dr Leila Dirir said: “We are putting this event on after a terrible year for everyone. We want to bring the community together for everyone to share their love for each other once more and feel connected. We are holding a fancy dress competition with a” Pride in Penketh” theme and we want to dedicate this event to all the key workers in Penketh who have kept the village going throughout the pandemic. We salute you!”
Another volunteer Sam Heathcote added: “we decided to make it extra special this year and hold a community picnic the day after on Sunday, Aug 15th. We will provide free live music, a bar and food stalls all day. We would ask the community to come along with their picnic blankets and enjoy the day with us! ”
The event is free to enter and will provide the community with free activities including crafts, circus workshop, interactive stalls and entertainment all day.
Because of the pandemic, there will no parade this year.
The organisers are calling for local children to join in the fancy dress competition which will be judged and a great selection of prizes including family Gullivers world tickets and toy vouchers are to be won!
Proceedings start at 12 noon on Greystone Recreational Ground when the Mersey bagpipers will pipe in the Mayor of Warrington Cllr Maureen Creaghan to officially open the event. If anyone wishes to have a stall please get in touch via [email protected]
