Broken Furniture? No Problem! Here Are Some Easy DIY Fixes

0

Furniture takes many hits. A prime example of wear-and-tear from daily use includes unsightly dents, scratches and white rings from when wet glasses are left on the table without coasters. Fortunately, we live in the age of DIY.

In the UK, retail sales were up 5.5% in September 2020, boosted by spending on DIY. Such a growing trend indicates that people are eager to gather the necessary materials and tackle fixing the damage to furniture themselves. But where to start if you’re in a conundrum with a piece of furniture made from a material you haven’t worked with before?

Furniture Made Out Of Wood

Wood furniture looks beautiful, and it’s also a resilient material. That said, life is full of the unexpected, meaning wood furniture is far from immune to water stains or worn edges. Luckily, to get rid of these problems, you only need one or two core ingredients.

White Rings

Water vapour can penetrate a finish, which causes white rings on wooden tables. You can remove them by using a cloth dampened with denatured alcohol. It’s important to remember that too much alcohol can dull the finish, so make sure you barely dampen the cloth.

Worn Edges

Worn edges affect all types of wood furniture, but don’t panic. They can be covered with touch-up markers. These markers come in several wood tones and can be used to colour edges or scratches.

Furniture Made Out Of Metal

Industrial style has made a comeback, with many homeowners opting for bricks and metals in their homes. Metal may seem like a long-lasting material, but it can become damaged.

Broken Legs

Like touch-up markers to fix wooden furniture, you can use metal glues to repair metal furniture, such as broken legs on garden chairs.

It’s worth mentioning that there are different metal glues and what you choose depends on what you’re using it for. For instance, if you need a quick repair job on your metal furniture, it’s best to use epoxy adhesives since they are fast drying. However, if your metal furniture is close to water, it’s worth going with polyurethanes due to their water-resistant qualities.

Metal glues can also be used to fix pots and pans. If one of your pot’s handles is loose, metal super glues can attach surfaces instantaneously.

Furniture Made Out Of Different Fabrics

Using different fabrics on your couches, pillows, and bed allow you to express yourself through colour and stitching designs, but these materials are prone to developing problems the more they are used.

Drooping Sofa Cushions

An old sofa develops droopiness in its cushions. You can fix this by re-stuffing your cushions with polyester fiberfill or quilt batting. Both can be purchased from craft stores.

While you’re fixing your sofa cushions, why not give them a new look? If you’re already at the craft store, pick up new pillowcases. We recommend trying the colours green or orange: both have been connected with clarity and concentration.

It can be disheartening when the furniture you purchased breaks or wears away. Luckily, there are many DIY hacks, regardless of the material, from touch-up markers to metal glues, which let you fix your furniture with ease.
