Storm over “affordable” flats plan for disused “Chevvies” pub site

PLANS to demolish a disused pub and build a three-storey block of “affordable” homes on the site have caused a storm at Warrington.

Nearby residents have objected to the proposed scheme on the site of the former Chevvies pub at the junction of Manchester Road and Padgate Lane – opposite Warrington Cemetery.
The development would consist of 23 one bed units and seven two bed units. A dedicated car park with 32 spaces and electric vehicle charging points would be at the rear.

Warrington Borough Council Planning officers will recommend approval when the scheme comes before the borough council’s development management committee next week.
But nearby residents have lodged objections on the grounds the pub was “left to rot”, that there is no need for flats in the area but a need for houses for families. They also claim the site is on a busy and congested junction and that the proposed development will not have enough parking.
They also claim the proposed building will be bleak and resemble a prison and will be out of character with existing Georgian and Victorian properties.
In particular they claim the development will not sit well with the gated entrance to the cemetery on the other side of Manchester Road.
Chevvies pub has not traded for about four years.
Officers argue that the development will be sustainable, will not have a serious impact on the cemetery buildings and is acceptable in the area.
Although the pub has not operated for three or four years, it is thought to have been unviable for a much longer period.
