ON their return to competitive football after a month’s enforced hibernation, Warrington Rylands 1906 continued with their crusade to Wembley beating Northern League Jarrow in the second round of the Buildbase FA Vase.
Having made the long trip up to the north east, the Blues, playing in all red, dominated the game from the off creating numerous chances in the first half going close to scoring several times whilst their hosts provided only an occasional threat.
Goalless at half time, Rylands broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half. A clearance from Tom Freeman found Andy Scarisbrick whose cross found Charlie Doyle who slotted the ball past the keeper.
The remainder of the second half followed a similar pattern with Rylands, playing their first game since 3rd November, dominating proceedings without finding the all important second goal.
Four minutes into stoppage time their inability to kill the game off allowed Jarrow to equalise with the last kick of the game through Darryl Donnelly leaving the tie to be decided by a penalty shoot out.
With goalkeeper Graeme McCall saving two of Jarrow’s spot kicks, penalties converted by Joe Coveney, Warren Gerrard, Mike Simpson, Lee Knight and Scarisbrick saw Rylands through to the third round winning the penalty shoot out 5-4.
