War memorial and part of churchyard sealed off after wall collapses

THE War Memorial and part of the churchyard at St Mary’s Church, Lymm has been sealed off following a collapse of part of the churchyard wall.
As a result, there is currently no public access to the memorial or graves close to it.
The Rector, the Rev Beverley Jameson said: “I am extremely sorry for the distress this may cause to those who will no longer have access to the graves of their loved ones. I know some people have aleady been caused some distress. ”
Heavy recent rainfall may have led to the collapse of the wall which is alongside the path to the memorial and Lymm Dam.
The wall has been left in a dangerous condition so the closure is necessary for health and safety reasons.
Rev Jameson added: “The churchyard Is a closed churchyard and is the responsibility of Warrington Borough Council, who have maintained the churchyard for some 13 years.
“The council has placed barriers to prevents access and the Diocese of Chester is working closely with the council to facilitate repairs but it may take some months before access is allowed to this part of our churchyard.”
Every effort is being made to have the repairs carried out as soon as possible so that the closed section of the graveyard can be re-opened, the Rector added.
She said the church was open, Monday to Wednesday, from 10am to 12 noon and there was a candle stand where visitors could light a candle. They could also write a prayer to leave in the church.
