Bernard shortlisted for “housing heroes” award

A WARRINGTON man has been shortlisted for a national “Housing Heroes” award.
Bernard Whitley, a Warrington Housing Association resident for seven years and a member of the association’s board for four years also volunteers helping residents aged 50-plus to stay fit and active.
He has been nominated in the Tenants Lifetime Contribution category.
As well as his service on the board, he also volunteers for the housing association’s LifeTime service, which supports people aged 50 and over to stay fit, active and connected, and he supports other residents where he lives at Lowry Close in Warrington with DIY projects, taking others shopping and for trips out, as well as organising a Christmas party for around 40 people each year.
Bernard, who is married to Margaret and has two children and four grandchildren, said: “I feel overwhelmed to be shortlisted for this award. It’s such a privilege – I never think about how much I do, you just do it, don’t you! It is important to help people out.”
The Housing Heroes Awards, which are jointly organised by Inside Housing and the Chartered Institute of Housing, will be held at Manchester in June.
David Cummins, chief executive of Warrington Housing Association, said: “The Housing Heroes Awards recognise the people that make housing great, and Bernard is certainly one of those people. He is most definitely a Warrington Housing Association hero, and we are delighted that he has been shortlisted for the award and that his hard work and dedication in helping people in Warrington live better lives is being recognised.”
