5 top tips on moving home this spring

Spring is one of the most popular times of year to move house. More people put houses up for sale at this time of year so there’s more chance of finding your new dream property.

The weather is starting to settle, the days are longer and the whole spring feeling is a strong one. So if you are planning on moving home this spring, here are some expert tips to help you.

Book your removals early

If there’s one thing you don’t want to leave to the last minute, it is the removals company. In fact, it is worth getting moving quotes well ahead of the move so you have an idea of costs involved and what factors might affect the move. For example, you may find if you are moving a considerable distance, the move might take two days rather than just one by the time the company load, travel and unload.

Book your removals company as early as possible once you know the date of the move. That way you have their services secured, can start packing and they may even offer storage if you want to store stuff off-site for a while.

Prepare a list of jobs

The actual buying and selling of the house is one part of the move but it isn’t all of it. There are loads of smaller tasks that need to be handled and you want to get organised with them as early as possible. For example, you will likely want to be taking Sky TV with you when you when moving house so you need to contact them about setting up the dish and the system. You will want a landline and internet connection to be operational.

Make a list of all of these jobs, large and small and have some time to handle them. While official things like driving license and bank accounts are easy to remember, don’t forget all the little stuff too.

Declutter as you prepare

Spring cleaning is a thing and this year, you want to take it one step further – declutter and clean as you prepare for the move. There’s no point in moving stuff then throwing it out. So save the packing space and work by decluttering, sorting as well as cleaning at the start.

You can categories stuff into three groups – keep, recycle/donate and throw away. By having boxes for the latter two, you can easily clean these out and keep clutter to a minimum.

Label everything

There’s nothing worse than packing something, realising you need it and then not knowing where it is. That’s why labelling everything as you pack is extremely important. You also want to put a note of which room it is from or where it will be going – because your removal team will use this. By telling them what boxes will be going where in the move, you can cut down sorting time afterwards. And a quick note of what the content is for those mixed boxes can mean items needed unexpectedly can easily be found.

Prepare for all weather

We all hope for a fine day when we move but the weather doesn’t always comply. So it pays to be ready for all weather because if it is a rainy, miserable day, you don’t want to have to spend time cleaning up or carpet cleaning once your stuff has gone before you can hand over the house to the buyer.

Plastic sheeting for the floor and to go over cardboard boxes can be handy. That way the mess is contained, sheets can be wrapped up and popped in the car for the other end of the journey and you are ready for the worst the weather has to throw at your move.
