TWO former Warrington pupils presented their own research to Parliament at the finals of the STEM for Britain competition at Westminister.
During the event, Dr Tom Crawford, 29, now a mathematician at Oxford University, and Aisha Bismillah, 26, a PhD student at Durham University, presented their research in the competition for early-career researchers.
Overall aim of the competition is to encourage, support and promote Britain’s early-stage and early-career research scientists, engineers, technologists and mathematicians who are an essential part of continuing progress and development of UK research.
Aisha and Tom were shortlisted from hundreds of applicants to appear in Parliament and were judged by leading academics against dozens of other scientists.
Warrington South MP Faisal Rashid met the pair.
He said: “It was wonderful to see two early career graduates from Warrington present their research to Parliamentarians this week. Both Tom and Aisha are a credit to our schools and our to our town. They should be incredibly proud of their achievements to date. I am certain that they both have very bright futures ahead of them.
“I believe it is so important to invest in our younger generation and develop their skills, capabilities and create opportunities where they can pursue their interests.
“It was a privilege not only to see Warrington so well-represented, but also to help to support STEM research in the UK. We always need more scientists and mathematicians to meet the changing demands of our economy.
“Both students set a great example for Warrington pupils and I am sure that their work will inspire others from our community to follow in their footsteps. Aisha and Tom are both fantastic examples of what can be achieved with hard work and a passion for their chosen subjects of interest. I look forward to meeting many more Warrington pupils in this competition in the years to come.”
