160 rented homes planned for former Wilderspool Stadium

PLANS for 160 rented houses on the site of Warrington’s famous Wilderspool Stadium have been submitted to the borough council – 15 years after it closed down.
The estate – described as “an exemplar housing scheme” – will be named in honour of Rugby League legend Brian Bevan, Warrington’s winger who scored a world record 796 tries in a career spanning 22 years.
A planning application has been submitted for the proposed development by Wire Regeneration, a joint venture between developer Langtree and Warrington Borough Council, and will be the first scheme in its wider plans to transform the town’s Southern Gateway.
The development is being designed
“to reflect the very best standards in urban design”, according to Neal Biddle, group development director at Langtree.
He said: “We are setting the tone for our wider ambitions to create a fitting gateway to the town centre.
“And, of course, we want to honour the standards Brian Bevan himself set, which are yet to be equalled.”
Ward councillors and local residents have been informed of the proposals and it is hoped the scheme will secure planning permission early next year.  Work would start shortly afterwards.
The £25m scheme, to be called Bevan Mews with the blessing of Brian Bevan’s family, will be funded by one of Langtree’s institutional clients.
Brian Bevan played 620 times for Warrington between 1946-1962, scoring 740 tries for the club, having initially been rejected on his arrival from Australia by Leeds, a decision later described as akin ‘to Decca turning down the Beatles’.
