A chance to see and learn about bats

AN opportunity to see and learn something about bats comes on Sunday at Stockton Heath.
A “bat watch” has been organised by Stockton Heath Parish Council and will be led by Tony Park of the World Museum, Liverpool.
The event will take place as darkness falls over the water at Ackers Pit and the meeting point is the noticeboard at Ackers Lane.
A few bat detector devices will be available which will help people “hear” the bats as they send out their ultra-sonic signals which
help them detect their prey and the obstacles they need to avoid while they are on the wing.
All are welcome to attend but children under the age of 16 years must be accompanied by an adult.
Adults are responsible for any children in their party and should be aware that the walk will take place in low light and near a body of water. Dogs should be kept on a lead inorder to avoid disturbing wildlife that may be present.
Participants should wear clothing appropriate for the weather conditions and suitable footwear carry a torch, although not for using during the water and this could keep the bats away.
A council spokesperson said: “Bats are not guaranteed on the evening itself, but lots of information on the habits and habitats of bats will be available which may help people to bat-watch on their own in the future.”
