“Garden grabbing is OK” say planners

PLANNING chiefs at Warrington have given the go-ahead for a pair of houses in a rear garden where two previous houses were built 10 years ago.
Penketh and Cuerdley Parish Council had objected to the scheme in Warrington Road, Penketh along with a number of neighbours who claimed the development amounted to “garden grabbing.”
But officers recommended approval, pointing out there was nothing in principle against building houses in gardens providing the development complied with policy.
Members of the borough’s development management committee heard that a pair of semi-detached houses had been built in the garden in 2008.
Two years earlier, a plan to build a block of four apartments in the garden had been refused.
But objectors said the scheme would be “garden grabbing” and would rob residents of Arlington Drive of privacy and also affect their security.
In addition, a number of bird species which nested in trees which were to be removed would be lost.
However, one neighbour supported the scheme and said they were impressed with its design and the overall layout of the development.
