VIDEO: PROTESTERS opposing the development of green belt land in South Warrington staged an awareness raising walk along the Trans Pennine Trail at Grappenhall.

The walk by WA4 campaigners was led by  “Canaries on tour” who are voicing concerns over proposed green development in the south of the borough and possible use of part of the Trans Pennine Trail as a road link.

Event organiser Helen Gumani said: “The aim of this walk is to raise awareness about the loss or green space and induce transparency and accountability from those who are elected to represent us.

“We don’t want the Trans Pennine Trail turning into a road. We want to keep it as an amenity for local people who use it and to protect the local wildlife.

“This is a very important amenity for local people.”

Helen added that the canary theme was to raise awareness of pollution issues.

“They used to take canaries down the mines as they were sensitive to pollution and would drop dead if there were any poisonous gases. We do’t want the same happening to people!”

The Canaries will be on tour again tonight (Monday) from 6pm at Warrington Town Hall prior to a meeting of Full Council.
