A ROGUE trader has been ordered to pay out nearly £3,000 after pleading guilty at Warrington to charges of failing to carry out work that he received payment for and for using a fake business address.
Patrick Doherty, 21, formerly of Sandbach, but now living in Kingston-upon-Thames, was investigated by Warrington Trading Standards after conning two householders in Warrington.
He charged two residents for work he hadn’t carried out and for materials he hadn’t used. He claimed to have cleaned guttering and re-mortared at one address when he hadn’t done the work. At another address he offered to work on a beam in the house that didn’t exist. He also produced fliers with a fake address at a Warrington business park.
Doherty was ordered to pay compensation to the two victims of £450 and £400, £800 in fines, £1,200 in costs and a victim surcharge of £50.
After the hearing, Cllr Judith Guthrie, the council’s lead member for public protection, said: “Our trading standards team works very hard to make sure that rogue traders don’t take advantage of Warrington consumers. It’s terrible to see householders facing the distress and loss of money that comes with these crimes but it also tarnishes the reputation of the trades.
“I’m very pleased that another rogue trader has been brought to justice and we encourage anyone who has any concerns to call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline 03454 040506.”
