Penketh Carnival – “The Best Of British”

1

This year’s Penketh Carnival had a patriotic feel as “the Best of British” was chosen as the theme for the traditional community parade through the streets.

Even the weather played its part with glorious sunshine beaming down on the hundreds of walkers in one of the best summers in recent history.

Amongst the groups and individual fancy dress participants were Suffragettes celebrating 100 years of emancipation, Doctors, nurses and patients in honour of the 70th anniversary of the N.H.S. and one very imaginative group even dressed up as the Red Arrows .

The winners of the best group fancy dress went to the 6th Warrington Brownies and Guides for their fantastic portrayal of the Suffragette movement and winning the individual prize was 3 ½ years old Ava Passey who was a beautiful unicorn.

Mustering at Penketh High School at 11 am the procession was then led on its way through the streets lined with local well-wishers and Union and St. George flags were waved in abundance.

After the journey through Penketh it was off to the Greystone Rec field where a huge funfair and dozens of various stalls had set up to entertain, feed and water the excited crowd.

Entertainers included the Thelwall Morris Men, Warrington Animal Welfare Dog Show, Back Step Boogie Club dancers, An amazing George Formby Tribute act from Anthony Mason. Proving extremely popular were the ponies from Friends Lane Riding stables who set up a pony party where children queued to groom and pet Honey and Coco the ponies.

On stage, compered by the entertaining Paul Dean , headliners and local band “that old chestnut” belted out tunes.

As ever these important community events take a lot of organising to ensure everything runs smoothly and the host of volunteers made sure everything was in control.

A spokesperson for the Penketh Carnival team said ” We would like to thank all the wonderful volunteers, the local business community and everyone else who came together to help make this another great success. Also a big thanks to Chris Whitfield,Linda and Allin Dirrir who put into place much of the planning back in January”
