Disability bus pass scheme launched

WARRINGTON’S Own Buses – the new name for Network Warrington – has launched a disability-friendly pass scheme with Woolston Sixth Form College.
Woolston College provides education to students with a range of special educational needs, and the college has teamed up with the town’s bus company to help its learners travel safely and independently around the town.
The scheme will give students the opportunity to travel directly from the college to the town centre and back. It is hoped that through the scheme, they will gain the skills and confidence to travel unassisted.
Assistant head teacher Neil Bothwell said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to develop the skills and self-confidence to travel independently.
“We work very hard to allow our students to have the same opportunities as everyone else. This scheme allows them to practise skills that they can take forward in their lives to allow them to access the local and wider community for social activities and potential work opportunities.
“We are very thankful to Warrington’s Own Buses for their support.”
One of the students involved, said: “I can travel to work in Warrington and most importantly I will be able to travel by myself.”
Ben Wakerley, managing director of the bus comp[any said: “Travelling independently is a key life skill and I’m proud that we are able to support students through this scheme.
“We do our best to support passengers with additional needs, and the disability-friendly pass partnership is another way in which we’ve been able to offer a hand to those who might need a little extra support.”
“Our drivers so far have been of the upmost assistance to the travelling students and I would like to thank them for their support in establishing the scheme.”
