A WARRINGTON student who was inspired to learn languages by her grandparents has secured a place at Cambridge.
Aimee Cartwright hopes to study French and Spanish at Cambridge when she becomes the first member of her immediate family to go to university.
Currently she is studying A-Levels in French, English Language and Religious Studies at Priestley College.
She first became interested in studying at Oxbridge while she was at Great Sankey High School.
But she was inspired to learn languages after seeing her grandparents attempting to learn Spanish after moving abroad.
She said: “I’m not a very scientific or mathematical person, but I love problem solving in languages.
“There’s not one right answer because when you translate a phrase people can interpret it in different ways and that’s one of the things I like about it.”
Aimee, aged 18, faced a day of interviews and tests at Cambridge before receiving an offer. She didn’t expect to get in, because only one in five receive an offer.
However, after taking the Graduate course at Priestley, she began feel it was realistic.
She needs two A*s and an A to reach Cambridge but in Year 1 at Priestley she also took Sociology and believes the extra AS-Level helped her application stand out.
During an interview for each subject she had to answer questions in French and English and then speak a sentence of Spanish to prove some knowledge of the language.
There was also a written test on the day.
