WOMEN in Warrington are being urged to get the year off to an active start by getting involved in a new “This Girl Can” initiative.
LiveWire and Warrington Borough Council’s free 10-week exercise programme gets under way this week.
Open to women aged 18 and over, “This Warrington Girl Can” is part of the national This Girl Can initiative, designed to provide a taster of different ways to be more active.
The scheme offers the chance to take part in a range of fun activities, such as belly dancing, golf, tennis, archery, pilates, yoga and much more.
Women will be supported through the 10 weeks by a mentor who will help them believe “they can” by maintaining their self-belief, confidence and motivation.
The council’s lead member for public health and wellbeing, Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, said: “This Girl Can is a fantastic initiative which challenges women to get involved in activities they never thought they would try.
“The initiative is aimed at women who may have lacked the confidence to take part in activities which help them get active and healthy. It breaks down those barriers and gives women the chance to make positive changes in a fun way with like-minded people.
“The new year is the perfect time to try new things, and I would encourage Warrington women who have been thinking about getting active to sign up and make lifestyle changes that will last.”
The initiative is being run by the Active LiveWire team in partnership with the council’s neighbourhoods team.
Emma Hutchinson, managing director of LiveWire, said: “We are delighted to be a part of the ‘This Girl Can’ initiative again this year. Women who have taken part in previous programs have achieved some amazing results.
“LiveWire constantly aims to bring the best campaigns to the Warrington community and we’re really excited about this year’s initiative.”
Women who would like to sign up for the project or find out more, can pop along to Radley Common Community Centre, Grasmere Avenue, tomorrow (Tuesday) from 2pm-5pm or at Orford Community Hub, Festival Avenue, on Thursday from 6-8pm.
