WARRINGTON South MP Faisal Rashid is to urge the borough council to promote the town’s status as a “Fairtrade Borough” on local road signage.
This is just one of a number of initiatives the MP is considering following a meeting with the Warrington Fairtrade Streering Group.
He has also joined the All Party Parliamentary Group for Fairtrade and signed a Parliamentary motion calling for increased scrutiny over fair trade deals with the UK.
Warrington became a Fairtrade town in 2006 and in since then has had to show there is a real commitment to Fairtrade in all areas of the community.
Across Warrington, Fairtrade is supported by local industry, schools, churches and societies as well as many businesses.
The steering group exists to help the town maintain the criteria of a Fairtrade borugh and organises the annual Fairtrade Fortniight, which next years runs from February 26.
After meeting the group, Mr Rashid said: “I was interested to learn more about Fairtrade and what we can do across Warrington South and in Parliament to promote it.
“I am committed to supporting Fairtrade and I have pledged that my office will be Fairtrade. I will be promoting the use of Fairtrade products wherever possible. I will also be contacting Warrington Borough Council to see whether it would be possible to promote Warrington’s status as a Fairtrade Town on local road signage.
“I have pledged to continue to buy Fairtrade and I would encourage all my constituents to support Fairtrade in Warrington, either by purchasing Fairtrade products in stores or by joining the Warrington Fairtrade Steering Group.”
