Lymm is blooming – but more volunteers needed

LYMM in Bloom is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year and is urgently on the look out for more volunteers to join their award winning group.

Founded in 2012, in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by local youngster Ben Selwood when he was aged 20, the volunteer group has gone from strength to strength, winning many Silver Gilt awards in the RHS Britain in Bloom North West Competition.

The village has recently been judged for the 2017 awards.

Ben, now aged 25 and Chairman of the group, said “This year Lymm in Bloom turns 5 years old. In that time we have planted and tided up many local areas, including introducing planters at the cross, Statham, Oughtrington, Broomedge, and Ridgway Grundy Memorial Park. We also do work to look after the Sunken Garden. We really took off in our second year and it’s gone uphill ever since. We are now looking to the future.”

“We have a very good hardworking group of loyal volunteers, but we are in desperate need of more. There is plenty of work to be done.”

“This year we have gone for a more bee friendly theme in certain areas, as we have recognised the importance of the bee to life. The bedding in the lower dam planters was planted with bee and bird friendly plants. ”

The group’s volunteers help look after many areas in the village including the Sunken Garden and the Lower Dam flowerbeds in the village centre amongst others. Volunteers also run a gardening club at Statham County Primary School and the group are avid supporters of the work of Lymm Jubilee WI, Lymm Jubilee Gardening Club, The Festivities Group, Low Carbon Lymm, The Bright Futures Allotment, Oughtrington Community Orchard and the new Keep Lymm Kleen group.

Ben added: “We couldn’t do it without the help of the other groups and societies. Thanks to them, the village looks great.”

Volunteers look after the grounds at St Peters Church in Oughtrington and run a successful Gardening Club at Statham Primary School. The judges were very impressed by the work of these two groups.

As well as this work, the run an adopt-a-plot scheme, whereby residents can adopt the space under the road sign on their road.

The group are also very grateful to Lymm Parish Council, who has supported the group since the start.

Lymm in Bloom working parties are held on the last Sunday in the month at the Sunken Garden (Next to Sexton’s Village Bakery) at 10:30am.

The Judges from NW in Bloom came to the village on July 19 and luckily George Hussey had planted round the bases of Northway, Meadow View and Star Lane.

The group had hoped there would be more decoration around the village. The Connellys are still keeping Lymmington Ave signage attractive and Su Williams worked on the Whitbarrow Road sign.  She hopes it survives the forthcoming roadworks but is “very pleased” that the re surfacing is at last happening!
