Anniversary of the loss of Warrington’s “Titanic”

AUTHOR Gill Hoffs is to hold a book-signing in the town to mark the 163rd anniversary of the wrecking of the Warrington-built ship RMS Tayleur – and promote her book about the ship.
It will take place at Waterstones on Saturday, January 21 between 1-2pm.
The Latchford-based author will also be holding a question and answer session about shipwrecks she has written about.
Ms Hoffs describes  RMS Tayleur as “the Victorian Titanic.” She will be displaying some artefacts from the Tayleur wreck, original newspaper cuttings and Victorian clothing.
She said: “If there are any local kids looking to learn more about Victorians for school, or how to become a writer,  then they are also most welcome to come along.”
She will also have copies of her new shipwreck book “The Lost Story of the William & Mary: The Cowardice of Captain Stinson”.
RMS Tayleur was the biggest ship of her type in the world at the time she was launched.
But within 48 hours she was wrecked against an Irish cliff – apparently because the ship’s compasses were confused by the metal hull.
