A happier Christmas for hundreds of children

HUNDREDS of children across Warrington will have a happier Christmas after residents generously donated gifts.
The Neighbourhoods in Warrington team have been inundated with donations over the past few weeks ready to help families suffering from financial difficulties.
Residents have been dropping off new toys, books, pyjamas, toiletries and pre-loved toys to make sure children aged 0 to 16 have a present to open on Christmas day.
More than 250 children have received gifts this year with each child also being sent a special letter from Santa.
One Orford resident said: “I’m truly overwhelmed at the kindness that has been shown to me and my family. Just to know things like this are available is amazing.
“I’ve always had the means to buy presents until this year when our circumstances changed. I was going to have to put myself in debt to give my boys gifts to open on Christmas day so this has truly been a lifesaver and it has made a huge difference.”
The appeal was supported by many local organisations including Culcheth High School, Fairfield Resident’s Association and local supermarkets.
Cllr Tony Higgins, the borough council’s lead member for culture, leisure and community, said: “It’s a sad fact that during a time of joy, festivity and celebration, some children have little or nothing to look forward to at Christmas.
“We would like to say thank you to everyone who donated as, for many families, these gifts are the only ones they receive.
“We are delighted that, due to the generosity of our staff, residents and local businesses, we have been able to bring some Christmas cheer to so many children.”
Due to the large amount of donations, remaining gifts were handed out at the children in care celebration event on last Sunday.
