Rain forecast to hold off until after Walking Day procession

THE 182nd Warrington Walking Day was greeted by a mixture of sunshine and clouds today – as weather forecasters predicted there would be no rain until 3pm.

An estimated 3,000 walkers, accompanied by marching bands, were expected to take part in the town’s great demonstration of faith.

Road closures and restrictions were in place from 7am to enable walkers from outlying church to make their way to the Town Hall where they were due to assemble on the lawn prior to setting off on the great procession through the town centre at 10.30am.

Churches, schools and other organisations were arriving to take part  in the parade.
The route takes in Sankey Street, Arpley Street, Museum Street, St Austin’s Lane, Friars Gate, Bridge Street, Market Gate and Horsemarket Street and the town centre was closed to traffic for the duration of the procession.

Warrington Walking Day was originally founded by a former Rector of Warrington as a counter-attraction to Newton Races which, he believed, were attracting many townsfolk to gambling and drink.
Newton Races died out years ago – but the great Walk of Christian Witness continues.
