“Green spaces must be preserved in school sell-off”

COUNCILLORS want to see valuable green space preserved if a historic former school building is sold off by Warrington Borough Council.
Members of Stockton Heath Parish Council’s planning, finance and general purposes committee have expressed concern over the future of the former residential Grappenhall Hall School, which closed last year.
The borough council intends to apply to the Secretary of State for Education for consent to dispose of the land at the former school and is currently consulting interested parties, including parish councils in the area.
The school building is likely to be used for other purposes if sold.  A hotel, free school and nursing home have all been suggested as possibilities.
Stockton Heath parish councillors say they would want to see valuable green space at the school preserved.
They believe the old house itself is listed and, as such, must be preserved.
Any future development on the site would be restricted due to access issues in a conservation area and the site’s close proximity to a primary school, they believed.

  1. If Stockton Heath Parish Council believes the old house is listed and should therefore be preserved, they should check to confirm it is listed with the appropriate organization before it is too late. The late Ship Inn at Walton – considerably older than “the old house” – was apparently locally listed but that classification counted for little with WBC etc.
