Flying the flag for transgender community

WARRINGTON Borough Council is today supporting the international Transgender Day of Visibility by raising the transgender community’s five-striped flag above the Town Hall.
Trans Warrington, formed to raise awareness of the transgender community locally, has organised a series of events aimed at breaking down some of the prejudices surrounding transgender issues. Events include an organised walk from Westbrook to Stockton Heath via the town centre from 9.30am to 3.30pm.
Michelle Winstanley, chairman of Trans Warrington, said: “We have been trying to raise awareness of the transgender community in our town. As this is our first full year we propose to hold at least four major events within the town. This is our first one.”
Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Geoff Settle, added: “As Mayor and Mayoress, and as deputies previously, Jean and I have been pleased to support and speak twice at the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.
“Michelle has certainly helped raise our awareness to challenges that transgender people face and we are glad that Warrington Borough Council is participating in this event.
“We think that seeing the colourful flag flying above the Town Hall will bring awareness to many more people in Warrington.”
Walkers will reach the town hall at 12 noon.
Trans Warrington will also have an information stall at the Gateway, Sankey Street, from 10am to 3.30pm.
