Models’ campaign against disability discrimination

A GROUP of models touring the UK campaigning against discrimination against disability in the fashion world is to visit Warrington on Saturday (March 12).
Warrington Borough Council is asking residents to support the campaign by “Models of Diversity” when they arrive at the town centre in Market Gate from 10am–3pm, by signing their petition.
Gemma Flanagan, assistant director for disability for the charity, said: “I myself am a disabled model after having an illness four years ago which left me this way. I have since faced disability discrimination head on. We have launched a petition in which we are asking for fashion to reflect disability in society.
“At present within the UK one in six people have a disability of some sort whether visible or not, yet this is not reflected in fashion in any way.”
The charity is on tour around the country to try and get as many signatures as possible in order to get the issue discussed in parliament.
Cllr Hitesh Patel, the borough council’s lead member for equality and diversity, said: “We fully support what these models are trying to achieve. Ending discrimination against disability in an area as high profile as modelling would really help to make it less acceptable at all
levels.”
