VIDEO & PICTURES: WARRINGTON Wolves went top of the Super League table with their third successive win, defeating Wakefield 34-16 as the club paid a fitting tribute to local band Viola Beach who tragically died in a car crash in Sweden.
Although not as comprehensive as the same fixture last season, the Wolves again looked impressive as they ran in six tries.
Prior to kick-off, fans at the Halliwell Jones Stadium united in a special tribute to the band Viola Beach and their manager Craig Tarry.
Ben Currie opened the scoring with a 70 metre interception, before Ryan Atkins put Kevin Penny through for a walk in down the touchline.
Kurt Gidley’s score sandwiched Wakefield tries from Craig Hall and Anthony Tupou either side of the break, with the Wolves 24-6 up at half time.
A lovely chip and chase try from Chris Sandow stretched the advantage further, and when Currie got on the end of Gidley’s short kick through, it was just a matter of how many the Wolves would score.
Ultimately, it was just one more, through Sandow, as Wakefield had the last say with the final try from Jon Molloy.
