A NEW exhibition which showcases the work of members of The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) has opened at Warrington’s Pyramid arts centre.
The exhibition is the first for the North West region of the society and aims to showcase the talent of local photographers. Founded in 1853, the RPS has approximately 11,000 members, more than 700 of which are based in the region.
RPS judges have carefully selected 50 photographs to appear in the exhibition including still life, landscape and portrait images. They have awarded gold, silver and bronze medals to the top three photographs.
Jon Allanson, from Cheadle won gold prize for his image, Old Boats in Mist.
The silver prize went to Anthony Black from Rossendale for his image, Multicultural Tube.
Wigan photographer, Brian Smethurst took home the bronze prize for his image, Monk at Angkor Wat.
The judging panel consisted of well-respected photographer Ian Cartwright, a who runs his own company, Dr Ron M Callender who is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and Nina Agnew from the North West region of the Royal Photographic Society who has also helped organise the exhibition with the support of Dr Afzal Ansary who is
also a fellow from the Royal Photographic Society.
To coincide with the RPS exhibition, the Hot Bed Press is running a Photographic Printmaking School during the Easter holidays, complete with an etching press, inking plates, rollers and inks. Each workshop is a short taster to the possibilities of marrying photography with printmaking.
Derek Dick, outreach and engagement manager at Culture Warrington, said: “The exhibition highlights the breadth of photographic talent across the region and it is hoped that it will also encourage others to get involved.”
The exhibition runs at Pyramid’s Gallery and Atrium space until April 30.
