MOTORISTS have been warned of possible traffic hold-ups in Warrington town centre following a crash on the M56 near Junction 14.
A lorry has jack-knifed across the eastbound carriageway, completely blocking the carriageway.
Delays are also being experienced on the westbound carriageway as a result. The driver of the lorry is unharmed.
At this stage, it is estimated it could take several hours to clear the scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
A police spokesman said: “Officers are doing their best to get those who are stuck in the traffic off the motorway as soon as possible. Motorists and passengers are advised to remain in their vehicles and stay hydrated.”
Those in genuine need of police assistance should call 999.
A spokeswoman for Warrington borough council said it was likely that traffic congestion could be experienced in the town centre as it was believed it could take four hours to clear the motorway.
