Warrington’s New Mayor is “all round good egg!”

WARRINGTON’S 132nd Mayor Cllr Geoff Settle was described as “an all round good egg” by council leader Terry O’Neill as he took up his year of office.Mayor_Geoff_Settle

Cllr Settle, (Lab) who represents Poulton North, was elected Mayor at the annual council meeting with his Mayoress wife Jean.

In proposing Cllr Settle, Cllr O’Neill (Lab) said he believed he would be a “tremendous ambassador the town,” and was an “all round good egg.”

Cllr Settle (pictured right) was seconded by Tory leader Cllr Paul Kennedy, who confessed that they first met online 10 years ago – as members of the warrington worldwide forum!

“We both posted in our own names which made a refreshing change and enjoyed plenty of banter,” he said.

Cllr Settle was born in Wavertree in the early 1950s, attending the same primary school as Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison – but not at the same time! He moved to Warrington in 1982 and worked as a software engineer for 31 years, before taking early retirement from Vertex.

His many interests include athletics and one of his claims to fame is running as part of the same team as Olympic legend Dr Ron Hill. Later as a keen member of Warrington Athletic Club he completed a marathon in 2 hours 42 mins and also ran around the Isle of Mann TT Circuit, where he regularly volunteers as a marshall.

He proposed to his wife Jean during a seven mile road race when they were crossing the Menai Bridge!

They have two grown up children Nick and Katie.

Cllr Settle entered local politics in 2010. He aims to be a #DigitalMayor engaging with the community via social media.

  1. Can’t see the point of having a mayor. What exactly will he do other than costing tax payers more money and driving round in a new flash car with the councils ED1 private reg on display and wearing a fancy chain, Adam and the Ants shirt and a Red Riding Hood cloak? Whoopee how fab.. no not really is it !

    • The Mayor has an important role to play in the local community and is well received at local events – you will be calling for the abolition of the monarchy next!
History and tradition is important for our community and we need to embrace it whole heartedly!

      • Never said anything about the monarchy. Read my reply to EAGLE.
Mayors are just elected councilors chosen by councilors so they each get their special bit of time in the limelight wearing a fancy costume and chain with benefits. So they go to events and open a few things but they’re not important people and have done nothing special to get to the position. Sad if the community do see them as more than that when there are way more deserving people who could be opening stuff and being involved.

    • That is a very kind comment Dizzy, the Forum was, and I am sure remains really great, but proved to be very time consuming and just at the moment I don’t have the time to make a worthwhile contribution. It was great to be asked to second Geoff to be Mayor, he is a genuinely nice person. I was pleased to be able to give WWW a name check as well.

      • Fair enough Paul and I know you are a busy man these days so I will let you off 😉 Nice to see you still taking an interest and reading things on here though 😀 Take care and keep up the good work… ps the canal fence got fixed, thanks 😀

    • Eagle – he might be a nice chap but so are a lot of people. Mayors are just council bods at the end of the day who got elected at some time so what’s the point ? Not like they have ever really done owt of great importance to justify their special role like they probably did in the past. Why don’t we all get to vote who we want as the next mayor or mayoress and why do they have to be councillors ?

      • Krazza, there is currently a position of Mayor of Warrington; I happen to think that Geoff Settle is an ideal candidate for this position. I have had dialogue with him on various subjects over the years, on occasion I have actually agreed with him. If you want to debate a principle then open a thread. In the meantime butt out.

        • EAGLE – I know Warrintgon has a mayor and has done for years I’m not stupid. Who said I was having a go at him specifically as I wasn’t. Found it funny to read that you say you have had ‘dialogue’ with this one and have occasionally agreed with him on things so you are sticking up for the fact that we have a mayor just because of that? Strange that and have you never spoken to anyone else or agreed with them then ? Maybe you need to get out more and meet some real people lol.
What’s with the open a thread and BUTT OUT bit ? I’m just doing what you are doing and leaving a reply under a news story that I found interesting and got me thinking. So hey how about you just butt out too and we call it quits. You can be mayor next time if you want.

  2. Krazza… what would you like to see a mayor do ? I Can’t look at him and the photo now without singing ‘Prince Charming’ though lol

  3. The Mayoral announcement is often a bone of contention with some people but having been Deputy Mayor for a year and looking forward to my Mayoral Year I have seen a different side to the office.
As 1st Citizen of the Town I see it as my duty to represent Warrington wherever I go to the best of my ability.
I know from the warm that the office is received at engagements that people are genuinely pleased to meet the Mayor and Mayoress and welcome them to events, celebrations and share their experiences. We can often be a conduit and help get things moving for groups and charities.
We have met some amazing people in the Town and learnt about the great things that they and their communities are and have been doing.
It’s going to be a very busy year and we are looking forward to a full and interesting schedule.
