A GROUP of lucky school children from Bewsey and Dallam were first to try out a new games area on Dallam Playing Fields.

The facility was opened at a celebration event on Friday 1 May and included a speech from the council’s director of public health, Dr Rita Robertson.

Warrington Wolves players Declan Patton and Joe Philbin attended the event and  brought along their team mascot, Wolfie, to join in the fun. The event was also attended by LiveWire, Golden Gates Housing Trust, Change4Life and the iVan.

The children, from Bewsey Lodge Primary School and Dallam Primary School, enjoyed a range of activities on the day including basketball, tennis and rugby which were delivered by LiveWire, Bank Quay Bulls and Warrington Wolves.

The multi-use games area (MUGA) has facilities for a range of sports and activities including basketball, 5 a side football and netball.

Delivered by the council’s Warrington Gardens team, the new facility is part of the ‘Delivering Wellbeing in Bewsey and Dallam’ initiative to redevelop and revitalise the area.

Cllr Kate Hannon, executive board member for leisure, community and culture, said: “Our ‘Delivering Wellbeing in Bewsey and Dallam’ scheme makes a commitment to our communities to create a place where can all be proud to live, work and do business.

“Use of this facility will have a great impact on local young people and hopefully encourage them to become actively involved in sports. I’m thrilled to see that the initiative is being put to good use and children in the area are benefitting from a brand new games area.”

Mathew Reeder, managing director at Lightmain, who company who built the facility, said: “We’re thrilled to see our MUGA being so well received within the community. Not only has it provided an opportunity for youngsters to increase their exercise but parents can rest assured they’re children are having fun in a safe and secure environment.

“Within our 25 years of working in this industry, it is still so pleasing to see one of our MUGAs being used to its full potential.”
