A FUND-RAISING evening in Stockton Heath featuring Warrington Wolves’ star Gareth O’Brien and Warrington Town manager Shaun Reid helped raise £2,600 for a local girl who requires special therapy to help her walk.
Little Abbie Heaney has a rare condition called Rett Syndrome, which mainly affects girls and although now aged two-and-a-half she has still not spoken her first word or shown any signs of walking.
The funds raised from a “Curry night” at the Cardoman Indian Restaurant helped raise the funds which will now go towards helping provide special therapy sessions for Abbie at the Birchwood based charity Brainwave, who are developing a specialist programme aimed at helping Abbie learn to walk.
Wolves half-back Gareth donated a signed shirt to the fund-raising appeal, while Warrington Town donated hospitality for four in the sponsors lounge at a home game.
During the event Gareth and Shaun took part in a Q&A session with the audience.
Brainwave helps children with disabilities and additional needs to achieve greater independence. Aiming to improve mobility, communication skills, and learning potential, through a range of educational and physical therapies, their therapists work with the family to devise a unique programme, specifically
designed to suit that child’s needs, which will help and encourage them to unlock their own child’s potential.
Abbie’s Mum Sarah said:”We would like to thank everyone for their support. It was a great evening and we are hopeful this specialist treatment will help Abbie take her first steps.”
Joanne Freeman, Brainwave’s Community Manager said “Brainwave’s therapy centre receives no funding from the government or NHS to help local families like the Heaney family, we are so
very grateful to the local community and companies for their continued support to help disabled children.”
