Residents threaten action over speeding

RESIDENTS of a narrow country lane are threatening to deliberately park their cars out in the road in an attempt to slow down traffic speeding passed their homes.
They say a 40mph limit is too high in Lumb Brook Road, Wright’s Green, Appleton – and they don’t think local councillors are doing enough about it.
In fact, Appleton Parish Council has been campaigning for a reduced speed limit for years.
Chairman Cllr Dot Edwards said: “I have been on the council for 30 years and in all that time we have been trying to persuade the highway authority to extend the 30mph limit, because we agree with the residents. But so far we have been unsuccessful.”
Cllr Brian Axcell said: “I think a 30mph limit would be appropriate for this part of Lumb Brook Road. In fact, it should be extended along the full length of the road.
“I understand the residents’ concerns, but the road is very narrow and this sometimes gives a perception of speed even when a driver is not exceeding the limit.
“It sometimes takes a long time to persuade the highway authority about speed limits and we shall continue trying.”
In the meantime the parish council has invested in a “Smiley Sid” portable speed indicator device which has been deployed by local Police Community Support Officers – including a spell at Wright’s Green.
It is intended to use the device at various locations in the parish.
