TWO students from Warrington’s Priestley College have been accepted onto a prestigious programme run by one of the world’s top universities.
Katheryn Thompson and Suzie Mahoney, both 16, are two of only 28 to be selected for the Pembroke North Programme run by Oxford University.
“For two of our students to secure these places is a great achievement,” said senior tutor Mark Salmon. 
“This will hopefully help Katheryn and Suzie to achieve their goals of studying at Oxford or one of the UK’s other top universities after they complete their A Levels at Priestley.”
To be accepted onto the year-long Pembroke North Programme students first had to prove themselves in an interview with Oxford tutors.
They will now attend six seminars and two residential schools, as well as complete a seminar presentation, and two essays which they will have to defend in Oxford-style tutorials with a postgraduate tutor.
Last year Priestley’s Jonathan Perfect won the Pembroke North Scholar Prize in Far East Studies after impressing the university with his ability and attitude.
Both Katheryn and Suzie are on Priestley’s unique graduate programme, which prepares high fliers for entry into Russell Group universities.
Former Penketh High pupil Katheryn is studying English Literature, English Language, History (Early Modern), Law and Maths.
She is hoping to read English at Oxford or one of the other Russell Group universities.
“I have always wanted to do English at degree level and as a career, but am keeping an open mind as to what exactly I want to do after university” she said.
“Being accepted onto the Pembroke North programme is important to me. I think I will really enjoy the whole experience, especially the week at Oxford being treated like an undergraduate, which is unique to the programme and very exciting.”
Suzanne, formerly of Altrincham Grammar School, said she felt honoured to be selected.
She is studying A Levels in Law, Politics, Psychology and Philosophy and is aiming for a career in the legal profession.
“I feel like my tutors expect a lot from me at Priestley so they’re helping me to achieve in my lessons,” said Suzanne, from Callands.
