Bats hold up housing development

PLANS for the construction of 54 one and two bedroom sheltered apartments at Penketh, near Warrington, have been held up – because of concerns there could be bats in adjacent trees.
The borough council’s planning committee deferred a decision on the proposals for the site of the former Penketh Court, in Farnworth Road because a report on the possibility of roosting bats in nearby trees had not been prepared.
Now the proposals will come before the committee again at their meeting on January 8.
Penketh Court – itself a sheltered housing unit – was demolished some time ago.
Two neighbours have lodged objections on the grounds the new, three-storey development will be “overbearing.”
But planning officers say the scheme is “sympathetic” to surrounding properties and can be satisfactorily integrated into the street scene without causing harm to the character of the area.
