Village parking problems a priority

TACKLING parking problems in a busy Warrington village centre will be a priority over the coming year, two parish councillors have pledged.
Councillors Mike Vobe and Matt Smith – members of Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council – say they have been liaising with residents of Burton Close, Heswall Avenue and other parts of Culcheth to gauge the extent of the problems.
They say they have secured a commitment from Warrington Borough Council that traffic surveys will be conducted in order to put solutions in place.
Cllr Vobe said: “We realise that parking congestion is not an issue that can be solved overnight, but it is a growing problem which we are striving to combat.
“That is why it was important to us that the council commissioned these surveys as soon as possible, so that we can work with local residents to tackle the worst-affected areas. To that end, we have committed that work to tackle parking problems will be a priority for parish councillors over the coming year.”
Cllr Smith added: “We have already seen fruitful results of work in areas like Daisy Bank Mill Close, where measures to tackle inappropriate parking have been implemented through close dialogue and co-operation with residents.
“In addition, we’ve secured huge investment in the Shaw Street Recreation Ground which, once begun, will transform the land into a user-friendly and secure car park for the village.
“We are always keen to hear residents’ ideas on how parking congestion can be further eased, so welcome anyone who wants to get in touch.”

  1. The long unmanaged and unmaintained council garage site off Ellesmere Road (a parking nightmare on most days) that could have provided a solution for residents’ parking was auctioned off earlier this year. Since then the site has been gated and residents cannot beneficially make use of it had the council retained control. Had it been retained and the decaying garages on it removed, parking spaces could have been allocated to residents for a minimal annual charge and some of the problems referred to here could have been eased. The surveys now being conducted might well have reached this conclusion before the decision to sell rather than retain was taken.
