WARRINGTON Wolves closed the gap on league leaders Wigan to just four
point with a stunning 22-12 victory over their arch rivals at the
Halliwell Jones Stadium as former Warrior Micky Higham prodcued a
man-of-the-match performance against his former club.
Higham was hand to grab the crucial try in the closing stages as the Wolves showed true grit and determination to battle back from 10-12 down in the closing stages of an epic battle.
Warrington survived intense Wigan pressure in the opening stages to become the first team to nil the Warriors this season in an opening half as they led 10-0 at the break, thanks to tries from the hard working Bennie Westwood after seven minutes, with Brett Hodgson adding the extras and Joel Monaghan on 30 minutes after a smart grubber kick by Lee Briers. Hodgson was wide with his second attempt as the Wolves went in 10-0 at the interval.
Within two minutes of the re-start the Warriors were back in the game as Sam Tomkins stretched over to score, with Pat Richards adding the extras.
Wigan were now on the front foot and took the lead when Gelling strode through a gap to score, with Richards again adding the extras to make it 10-12.
But Warrington showed great spirit despite losing talisman Lee Briers with a cut below his eye and in the final 10 minutes their efforts paid off as Chris Riley broke clear wide out and kicked on perfectly for Higham to touch down. With the clock ticking down Chris Hill powered over near the posts, with Hodgson again on target to secure a memorable victory.
