Town's skills needs under scrutiny

A REPORT looking at the economic, skills and learning needs of the town has been officially launched by the Warrington Skills Commission.
More than 50 representatives of businesses and organisations attended the launch event at Birchwood.
The commission has been investigating the current economic situation in Warrington to develop a framework for growth and prosperity in the town.
Led by Warrington Borough Council, the project includes representatives from Warrington Chamber of Commerce, the NHS, local businesses, the Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership, as well as schools and colleges.
It shows that predicted local growth areas are manufacturing, energy, nuclear, construction, communications, logistics and distribution.
Key areas for skills and education providers to focus their resources on were shown to include ICT, science, technology, health and social care and general employability skills.
A lively question and answer session included topics such as engineering training provision, developing entrepreneurial skills for start-up businesses and improving accessibility to apprenticeships.
Cllr Terry O’Neill, leader of Warrington Borough Council, said: “This council is wholly committed to encouraging employment opportunities for local people and promoting economic prosperity. We asked a simple, fundamental question at the start of this process, – what does success look like and how can we collectively help Warrington get there?
“I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the commission for their time in helping shape this groundbreaking piece of work. Now we need to ensure we turn these recommendations into a reality.”
One of the first outcomes will be the establishment of an active skills forum, led by Warrington Chamber of Commerce. It will include representatives from business, skills and education.
