Street gets a big makeover

A WARRINGTON street received a big makeover – thanks to an army of volunteers.
About 15 front gardens in Densham Avenue, Longford were transformed in a day by a crack team from United Utilities, working with tenants and housing workers.
The event was organised to help the company celebrate Graduate Week and was one of two carried out by talented rising business stars on the company’s respected graduate training programme.
Other teams of United Utilities graduates also spent two days transforming the access and nursery at Fairfield and Howley Community Centre, in Warrington.
Volunteer leader Simon Holding, 23, a United Utilities asset management graduate, said working with the tenants and staff from Golden Gates Housing Trust (GGHT) had been great.
He said: “I think we all enjoyed it. It was hard work, but we got such a lot done, probably even more than we expected. It was great to be able to help someone out.”
Neighbourhood co-ordinator Jane Lauchlan, from GGHT, which manages the Longford estate, said Densham Avenue had been transformed.
“The group did such a lot. Gardens were re-turfed, flower beds dug and planted and areas made ready for mulch and gravel. It looks great. We have already invested a lot of time and money in the area through the Longford Quality of Life project, but having such a good volunteer workforce has helped our resources go much further. A lot of the tenants got involved too. I just can’t thank people enough.”
At Longford, 12 graduates worked on the gardens, but numbers were boosted by a team of six more volunteers from the firm’s supply chain department, who were also keen to put something back into the community where United Utilities is such a big employer.

  1. Brilliant – I was there at the start of the day last Thursday at the Fairfield annd Howley Community Centre when I arrive to start my day driving for the Bilnd Society.

I was able to wish them all well and emphasise how much their efforts would be appreciated. I still remember thevolunteering work that I did when I worked for UU and its great to see this work being continued.

The transformation at the centre has been lead by Morris and Ian and their team have also helped them make the centre something very special and growing in popularity. Well done to all the volunteers both here and throughout Warrington. Times are very hard for many groups but I see a lot of laughter from the people who volunteers help. You are appreciated well done.

  2. Why whose experience should I be basing my comments on – I am me and not an alias- just maybe people who want to help say with the blind society can contact me and know that I am involved and can give them an idea of what it is they can do e.g. Driving or helping. Similarly I can point them to other opportunities such as what other sorrts of things business in the commmunity do or young enterprise. I just write from my experience and that’s my style.

  3. Apologies, the above was written on my phone and without my glasses what I meant to say was this:

Why whose experience should I be basing my comments on I am me and not an alias?

Perhaps people will want to read about my experience in order to put my comments/views in to some sort of context. For example they might want to help with the blind society and because I am a member they know that they can contact me for more information about Volunteering, say as a driver I also have experience with UU as a volunteer and know what it’s like.

I just write from my experience and that’s my style. In this case I have always found volunteering very rewarding as do loads of other people but there is always a need for more people to help out.
