Social care cuts to save £2.3m

ABOUT 1,500 people in Warrington currently receiving adult social care support could be affected by a proposed change to eligibility criteria designed to save the borough council £2.3 million a year.
Town Hall chiefs want to introduce the change next month, saving about £700,000 in the current financial year.
Consultation has already been carried out and 68 per cent of those who responded agreed that resources should be targeted at those in greatest need.
Cllr Pat Wright, the borough council’s executive member for health, wellbeing and adult services, in a report to the executive board, says Warrington is one of only 20 councils across the country who provide adult social care support to people adjudged to be in “moderate” need.
More than 120 councils provide support to people in “critical” or “substantial” need.
Although about 1,500 service users would be likely to be affected, not all would see a reduction in services as they would be subject to an individualised reassessment of their care needs.
People who did cease to receive any service funded by the council would be pointed to community based services.
The executive board will be asked to approve the new policy tonight (Monday)

  1. Absolutely disgraceful! There have already been cuts which have badly affected adults with social care needs. There are plenty of other areas where money is wasted and cuts could be made. It is nothing other than heart-less to target the most disadvantaged.

  2. Yet another example of how out of touch our local Council is with its residents. Attack the most vulnerable in our community as against making some real choices and stopping the continual waste of money throughout our Town. There are plenty of areas within WBC budget where savings could be made in stead of inflicting this heart-less decision on the least able to fight back!
