Planners to visit wartime camp site

PLANNING chiefs at Warrington are to visit a historic military camp site at the centre of a row over proposed housing in the Green Belt.
The scheme, put forward by Elan Real Estate, is for 25 four and five bedroomed houses off Lady Lane, Croft.
More than 400 residents have lodged objections, as has Croft Parish Council and local borough councillor Chris Vobe.
The developer has offered £30,000 towards the cost of highway improvements near St Lewis’ RC Primary School and £240,000 towards the cost of affordable housing elsewhere in the borough.
The site – known as HMS Gosling during World War 2 – is said to be the last of a number of military camps that once existed in the area.
The parish council says there is no need for more housing in Croft and that there are no sewage or gas supplies to the site, which is home to a wide variety of wildlife.
They believe there could be road safety issues arising from an unsatisfactory access to the site and that the development could lead to increased flooding in Lady Lane.
Additional housing could also exacerbate parking problems at St Lewis’ School.
Members of the borough council’s development management committee will visit the site before reaching a decision.
