SCHOOL children from Warrington will form a guard of honour for athletes making their way into the Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
The youngsters, from Bruche Primary School, Padgate, will line the route through the Olympic Park and into the stadium along with children from 249 other schools from across the UK on July 27.
They will be holding lanterns and banners they have created to support athletes from Latvia – a country they have been learning about.
Bruche Primary was selected through the reward and recognition programme of the Get Set network, the official London 2012 education programme.
Seb Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games said: “The presence of so many young people at the start of the Olympic Games opening ceremony will continue to show London 2012’s commitment to put young people at the heart of the Games.
“For athletes, the guard of honour will provide a stunning welcome to the Games and the perfect curtain raiser for the Athletes’ Parade.”
The children will also get the chance to tour the Olympic Park and see some of the London 2012 venues before the world turns its attention to the opening ceremony itself.
Head teacher Karen Hulse said: “We are very honoured to be involved in such a historic event and we hope it’s something that these children and our staff will have lovely memories of for the rest of their lives.”

  1. Like the head teacher said that is something that they will definately remember for the rest of their lives. What a privilage and I bet they can’t wait…. probably a lot of sleepless nights and counting of days between now and then as the excitement builds. I hope they enjoy ever single minute of it. Actually why did I say ‘hope’ as they ‘definately’ will 🙂
