Death of a music legend

THE death has occurred of John Tyldsley, proprietor of a legendary music shop in Warrington in the Fifties and Sixties.
He was 87 and had latterly lived at Preston.
Tyldsley’s music shop was in Green Street and most of the musicians who were part of the then thriving music scene in Warrington were his customers.
Brian Palfreman, drummer in local group The Renegades, who now runs the www.warringtonsixtiesmusic.co.uk website, said: “John was more than a shop proprietor – he was a true friend to all who knew him and his devotion to his clientele was legendary.
“Although John’s first love was the piano and classical music, this gentle giant of a man would show remarkable tolerance towards the younger generation, who were more concerned with the latest electrical gadgetry of the day. His extensive knowledge of the music industry and advice was revered by all.
“His shop became a meeting place for anyone with musical ability and his sharp wit and wonderful sense of humour will be sadly missed.”
Many musicians used Tyldesley’s shop because of the generous payment terms. They could pay on the “never never.”
Only in the last few years, John joked that there was one musician who still owed him 7s 6d from the Fifties.
