NINE young people from Warrington have announced they are running to be members of the UK Youth Parliament.
Six are from the north of the borough and three from the south. But only one from each constituency can be elected – plus two deputy members.
The UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) allows young people aged 11 to 18 to have a say on national issues that affect them.
It is made up of about 400 members MYPs), each representing around 10,000 young people from their local area.
They are elected by their peers.
This year’s candidates are: North Warrington: Amin Abdelhamid, from Birchwood High School, Lori Kendall, from Culcheth High School, Charlotte Izzard, from Birchwood High, Joel Davies, from Culcheth High, Emma Russell, Birchwood High and Sean Jackson – X-Pand Project. South Warrington: Steven Atkins and Mo Adeniran, both from St Gregory’s High School and Connor Simpson, from Priestley College.
Cllr Colin Froggatt (pictured), Warrington Borough Council’s executive member for children and young people’s services said: “I would like to wish all the Warrington candidates running for positions in the UK Youth Parliament the very best of luck.
“The UK Youth Parliament is an invaluable way for young people to have their say on national issues and is a great place for budding politicians to gain relevant experience.”
Anyone aged 13-17 in Warrington can run for the position of member or deputy member and the positions last for two years. Elections take place bi-annually in March and candidates are usually recruited through schools, colleges, youth projects and voluntary organisations.
This year elections, supported by Warrington Youth Service and the council’s electoral team will run from March 26-29 with voting taking place in schools, colleges and at the Youth Café. The results will be announced on Friday March 30 at Warrington Town Hall.
