Park facelift for Olympic torch visit

WARRINGTON’S Bank Park and the Town Hall lawns are set to undergo improvements ahead of the Olympic flame visiting the town in May.
Work is due to start next week and will be completed by May, with key developments including improving access to the park, reinstating the entrance pillars and gates on Sankey Street and installing information boards for visitors beside the Golden Gates.
The fountain at the rear of the Town Hall will be refurbished, park seating and bins are to be replaced, large rhododendron shrubs either side of the front lawn and trees and hedges will be cut back to create a more open aspect leading up to the Town Hall.
The footpath around the bowling greens will be resurfaced and wildflowers displays will be introduced create more colour and variety of plants.
Cllr Kate Hannon, the borough council’s executive member for leisure, community and culture, said: “These essential improvements will help to ensure Bank Park and the Town Hall grounds look their best for when the cameras are rolling during the Olympic flame visit, and also for residents to enjoy long after that.”

  1. Surely it wont cost much to plant a few wildflowers, stick some signs up and buy a few benches and bins. I’d imagine that the councils own bods will do all the planting and pruning so that wont cost anything and they can resurface the paths too. It already looks ok though but a splash of colour would look nice. Hope the new flowers etc don’t get trashed by yobs though.

  2. In reply to my own post… where I said surely it won’t cost much (I had a couple of thousand tops in my head)…. ignore that as I just read elsewhere that they are spending £176,000 on the work. Considering all the redundancies and savings they say they need to make I think spending that on the one small area just so it looks good on camera is disgraceful. It’s not like many people use Bank Park it at any other times anyway and the front of the town hall looks lovely as it is.
