Worries over boundary proposals

1

PUBLIC concern over proposals to “move” Penketh and Cuerdley into a new Widnes and Runcorn Parliamentary constituency have been sent to the Boundary Commission by Warrington Borough Council.
But residents of Penketh and Cuerdley have been assured that even if the move takes place, they will still live in Warrington, still be represented by Warrington borough councillors and still have Penketh and Cuerdley parish councillors.
It will only be when voting in Parliamentary elections that they will come under the new constituency.
The borough council decided to inform the independent Boundary Commission about the level of concern in the Penketh and Cuerdley areas after receiving reports of confusion about the proposals from local councillors.
A public consultation exercise is now underway on the proposed changes which would result in a number of boundary changes across Warrington.
The Warrington North constituency – currently represented by Labour MP Helen Jones – would consist of the following wards: Birchwood, Burtonwood and Winwick, Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft, Great Sankey North, Great Sankey South, Orford, Poplars and Hulme, Poulton North, Rixton and Woolston, Westbrook and Whittle Hall.
The Warrington South constituency, currently held by Conservative MP David Mowat, would consist of the following wards: Appleton, Bewsey and Whitecross, Fairfield and Howley, Grappenhall and Thelwall, Hatton, Stretton and Walton, Latchford East, Latchford West, Lymm, Poulton South and Stockton Heath. Three wards from Halton Borough Council, Daresbury, Norton North and Norton South, would also be added.
The changes would not come in effect until 2013.
Feedback on the proposals is welcome on the Boundary Commission’s consultation website until Monday 5 December:http://consultation.boundarycommissionforengland.independent.gov.uk/

  1. How on earth (except in the mind of a Politician of course) does Bewsey and Whitecross possibly qualify for being in Warrington South? It’s only two steps away from Wigan for heavens sake!!
